Principal's Corner

It might be an understatement to say that we are living through trying times. Despite these challenges, our school is forging ahead toward our “Big 3” goals established two years ago while supporting our students’ social and emotional needs. Last fall, we accomplished one of our “Big 3”, becoming a Washington STEM Lighthouse school! STEM is critical in the field of aviation where all plans, calculations, and systems must be accurate for successful flight. A pilot’s order of operations is Aviate, Navigate, and Communicate. The priority is to keep the plane in the air…then find your flight path to your destination…then communicate with ground control and your crew. What a great theme for life…especially given our current circumstances. This year we want to build on that, so we have chosen “Learn to fly” as our school theme.

This summer, we met our final metric to qualify as an AVID Schoolwide Site of Distinction which is the second of our Big 3 goals. We anticipate celebrating this honor next spring! That leaves only one more goal, and it’s ambitious – to earn a National Blue Ribbon. To qualify, we will need to score in the top 15% in our state in ELA and Math or be among the top 15% in closing the achievement gap. It will be difficult, but not impossible. As Amelia Earhart once said, “Everyone has oceans to fly, if they have the heart to do it. Is it reckless? Maybe. But what do dreams know of boundaries?”

We can’t wait for our students, staff, and families to be reunited once again. Until that time, we will forge ahead with preparation, hope, and positivity, making the best of a difficult situation…together.

Learn to fly!
