John Sedgwick Middle School earns STEM Lighthouse School Grant

South Kitsap School District – In August of 2018, staff at John Sedgwick Middle School set three long-term goals aligned with the mission and vision to get all students at grade level in reading, writing, and math. The staff committed to become a STEM Lighthouse School, an AVID School of Distinction, and a National Blue Ribbon School by 2023. They achieved the first goal and are thrilled to be recognized as a STEM Lighthouse School. The award has been given to only a handful of middle schools over the past six years.

STEM Lighthouse Schools originated in 2010 with the Legislature’s passage of House Bill 2621 which directed OSPI to designate schools to serve as models for others and includes awards up to $20,000. John Sedgwick Middle School is the first in South Kitsap School District to receive the distinction.

“We are overjoyed and humbled to receive this award which will create so many opportunities for our students, staff, and families. Thank you to our STEAM Team led by coordinator Candace Tetz for planning and working with staff. John Sedgwick incorporates arts as the “A” in STEAM because we believe the Arts bring STEM to life,” stated principal Dan Novick.

Washington STEM Lighthouse Schools provide technical assistance and advice to other schools and communities in the initial stages of creating a learning environment focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. They serve as resources and examples of how to combine the following best practices:

  • Small, highly personalized learning communities;
  • An interdisciplinary curriculum with a strong focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics delivered through project-based instructional approach; and
  • Active partnerships with businesses and the local community to connect learning beyond the classroom.
