Principal's Corner

Welcome to the 2021-22 school year!

In last year’s final edition of the General Gist, we used the analogy of mowing tall grass to describe this upcoming school year. We have a lot of work ahead of us to get our “lawn” back in shape, and it’s going to take great collaboration and motivation. For that reason, this year’s theme is “Reunited & Reignited!

That’s right…we’re fired up to be back together again because we have a lot to celebrate and a lot to do! To start the year, our primary focus will be on celebrating each other. It’s been a while since we have functioned as one school community, so we have some catching up to do. We will reacquaint ourselves and rediscover the Sedgwick General way of life. Yes, we will have COVID safety protocols in place, including masks and social distancing as much as possible, but we get to be together as one family! That means we’ll have to reteach some basic school behaviors and habits such as getting and staying organized, treating others with kindness, and learning where to find help and resources.

We will also take time to celebrate the great things that happened last year. Right away, you will notice big improvements in our building as our facilities and custodial teams have taken on many projects. We have upgraded our gym spaces, our wood shop, and our HVAC system. In addition, we have painted the front entrance, parking lot, all exterior doors, and other exterior features. We also accomplished one of our “Big 3” goals, being named an AVID Schoolwide Site of Distinction! This is a goal that has been six years in the making, so we will be sure to throw a party. We were also named a Project Lead the Way Distinguished School for the third year in a row! As an AVID and STEAM school, these are important honors recognizing our commitment to using AVID’s WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading) strategies and a STEAM-based science and elective curriculum taught at all grade levels in our school to prepare our students to be college and career-ready. Later this fall, with funding made possible by our Career and Technical Education Department, we will install a new school sign on the front of our building recognizing our school as an AVID and STEM school. It’s going to be extremely gratifying!

That leaves just one more goal to accomplish, and it’s a biggie…a National Blue Ribbon. The U.S. Department of Education awards National Blue Ribbons to schools who achieve excellence overall or significantly close the achievement gaps in the areas of English Language Arts and Math scores. We have not taken state tests for the past two springs, so we have been unable to formally assess our progress toward this goal; however, we will resume state testing this year, and we’re anxious to see how our students and staff are doing.

The past 18 months have not been easy, to say the least, but we are looking forward to better days ahead. It will take a few weeks to get our feet under us, but once we do, look out – we’ll soon be ablaze in the classroom, making up for lost time!

Reunited & Reignited!
